Burn Cottage Vineyard is wine producer located in Central Otago wine region of New Zealand's South Island. Established in 2002 by Marquis and Dianne Sauvage in 2002, it produces wine predominantly from the Pinot Noir grape variety.
Burn Cottage Vineyard Property is a twenty-four-hectare estate in the foothills of the Pisa range in Central Otago. The land was acquired in 2002, and prior had been grazed by sheep. With no immediate vineyard neighbours, this site was coveted for its shelter from the northerly and southerly winds via the large hills that form a beautiful, protected bowl, much like a modern amphitheatre.
The Burn Cottage Vineyard wine portfolio is predominantly Pinot Noir, complemented with small quantities of Riesling and Grüner-Veltliner wines in select vintages.
The Burn Cottage Pinot Noir is the flagship of the collection. It is also released as a library selection after aging in the cellar post-bottling.
Today, JC Fine Wines presents three of Burn Cottage's newly released most popular wines for our wine lovers, namely 2021 Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir, 2021 Burn Cottage Moonlight Race Pinot Noir, and 2020 Burn Cottage Sauvage Vineyard Pinot. These wines are not found very often on our shores, and in very limited quantities.
1. 2021 Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir 750ml
If you crave thoroughly pure, complex, and lavish Pinot Noirs, Burn Cottage’s flagship estate bottling will put you in a blissful stupor. Aside from full-on biodynamics in the vineyard and a scrupulous cellar regimen that would cause a number of Burgundian old-timers to take copious notes, these Pinot Noirs are currently equipped with some of the most doting and consistently high praise of contemporary times.
Winemaker Tasting Notes: “The 2021 Burn Cottage Valli Vineyard has bright, focused aromatics with rose petal, red fruits and savoury wild herbs. A wonderfully supple palate with concentrated fruit, fine structure and persistence. Enjoyable now, this wine will also reward cellaring for 7-10 years.” - 95 Points Grant Taylor
2. 2021 Burn Cottage Moonlight Race Pinot Noir 750ml
2014 was the first vintage of the Moonlight Race. It was a welcome addition offering a regional blend with the same ideology as the older sibling and hit the market with glowing reviews.
From vintage 2021, Moonlight Race Pinot Noir is created by combining three unique parcels of estate vineyard Pinot Noir, Burn Cottage Vineyard in Lowburn, and the Sauvage & Luna Vineyards in Bannockburn. It captures the essence of Central Otago Pinot Noir, with concentrated dark and red berry fruit flavours with a supple texture and fine tannins. Whilst it’s approachable now, there is cellaring potential of 7-8 years.
Moonlight Race is the second wine from cult Central Otago producer Burn Cottage. We don’t tend to see much of this hit our shores and with diminishing allocations of the big brother, this elegant and delicious number is a no-brainer.
"Lots of boysenberry and strawberry aromas and flavors with an underlying smoky and mineral edge. It’s full and layered with beautiful tannins and a long and flavorful finish. A little tight at the end. Gorgeous and curated. Drink or hold". 95 Points James Suckling
3. 2020 Burn Cottage Sauvage Vineyard Pinot Noir 750ml
The latest release from our 21 year old vineyard delivers the hallmarks of Bannockburn Pinot Noir, with a bountiful array of ripe black plum and cherries notes, that are underlain with bright red fruits, black tea, and savoury/spice characters.
The palate delivers ripe, juicy tannins, that are balanced by a crunchy red berry freshness. We believe, it’s an exciting & complex expression of Bannockburn Pinot Noir, and has cellaring potential of 10+ years.
Winemaker Tasting Notes: “Enticing perfume with floral notes, cherry and red fruits, black tea and olive underpinned with savoury and earth elements. Characteristic texture through the palate from this vineyard, there is a density and power yet wonderful finesse and flow to the wine. Lovely tannins throughout, providing length and balance to the lively acidity. Will also reward with time, expected cellaring up to 10-12 years." – Claire Mulholland, Burn Cottage
