Collection: KAY BROTHERS

Kay Brothers is a traditional family winery with a rich history dating back to 1890. One of 5 wineries in the Vale with vines planted in the 1880s (the others being Paxton, Ox Hardy, Richard Hamilton and d’Arenberg), the 20ha estate includes the original 1.5ha of Block 6 shiraz vines planted in 1892. The full-flavoured red and fortified wines can be particularly good. Both vines and wines are going from strength to strength here. -HALLIDAY TEAM

THE STORY

The one-and-a-half-hectare Block 6 Old Vine Shiraz vineyard was planted with cuttings from Hardys Tintara Vineyard in 1892 by Herbert and Frederick Kay. Traditional vinification techniques – including hand plunging in open fermenters, completion of fermentation in oak and maturation in new (40%) French and seasoned American oak puncheons for 18 to 24 months – lead to a rich, full-bodied style with generous, ripe fruits, fine, chocolatey tannins and balanced new oak.
