Collection: KATNOOK ESTATE

Katnook has taken significant strides since acquisition by Freixenet, the Spanish cava producer. The historic stone woolshed in which the 2nd vintage in Coonawarra (1896) was made, and which has served Katnook since 1980, has been restored. Likewise, the former office of John Riddoch has been restored and is now the cellar door. Well over half of the total estate plantings are cabernet sauvignon and shiraz; the Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon and Prodigy Shiraz are the duo at the top of a multi-tiered production. In Mar ‘18 Freixenet announced that Henkell, the Oetker Group’s sparkling wine branch, had acquired 50.67% of Freixenet’s shares, creating the world’s leading sparkling wine group. The brand was sold to Accolade in Aug ‘20. Exports to all major markets. -JAMES HALLIDAY

THE STORY

The richly concentrated and plush Katnook Odyssey is a powerful expression of Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon. Derived from classic terra rossa vineyard plots, it is batch vinified with maturation for 24 months in new (40%) French and American oak barriques. Some parcels are “double oaked” to increase flavour complexity. Intense, blackcurrant and leafy aromas, mocha oak complexity, dense, chocolatey tannins and mineral length define the style.
