The beautiful and historic name Mount Edelstone is a translation from the German Edelstein meaning ‘gemstone’, a reference to small yellow opals once found in the area. The Mount Edelstone vineyard was planted in 1912 by Ronald Angas, a descendant of George Fife Angas who founded The South Australian Company and played a significant part in the formation and establishment of South Australia. Unusual for its time, the vineyard was planted solely to shiraz. The ancient 500-million-year-old geology in the vineyard has given rise to soils that are deep red-brown clay-loam to clay, resulting in low yields from the dry-grown, ungrafted centenarian vines. First bottled as a single-vineyard wine in 1952 by fourth-generation Cyril Henschke; by the time Cyril purchased the vineyard from Colin Angas in 1974, Mount Edelstone was already well entrenched as one of Australia’s greatest shiraz wines.
Drinking Window: 2018-2035
Henschke’s Mount Edelstone was first bottled as a single vineyard wine in 1952. The 2014 has been released ahead of the 2013 which requires more time in bottle. Matured in 92% French and 8% American (28% new, 72% seasoned) hogsheads for 18 months.
Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Potent aromas of spicy dark plum, dried clove and liquorice merge with toasty vanillin cedar, some meatiness and dried herb end notes. Soft, silky and plush the medium bodied palate is one of great elegance featuring generous flavours of spicy ripe dark plums and liquorice over some vanillin cedar, dried herb infusions and a touch of meatiness. Excellent power with seamlessly integrated velvet smooth tannins. The finish long and lingering with spicy dark plums, liquorice, vanillin cedar, dried herb infusions and pepper. A very polished Mount Edelstone but it’s hard to justify the lofty price increase. Cellar 6-8 years. Alc 14.5%
