Overview

The 2016 Roagna Crichet Pajè Barbaresco is an extraordinarily rare and profound expression of Nebbiolo, drawn from the most exceptional old-vine parcels within the Pajè vineyard. Produced only in the greatest vintages and in extremely limited quantities, Crichet Pajè represents the pinnacle of Roagna’s Barbaresco philosophy — a wine of immense concentration, structural authority, and timeless elegance. The outstanding 2016 vintage elevates this release to legendary status.

Vineyard and Winemaking

Crichet Pajè is sourced from Roagna’s oldest vines within the Pajè cru, some planted over 80 years ago, rooted in calcareous marl soils in the heart of the Barbaresco commune. Yields are minuscule, harvested entirely by hand. Fermentation is conducted with indigenous yeasts in large wooden vats, followed by very long maceration to extract depth and tannin gently. The wine is aged for around five years in large neutral Slavonian oak botti, then further refined in bottle before release. No fining or filtration is used, ensuring absolute transparency of site and vine age.

Tasting Notes

The bouquet is intensely layered and precise, revealing sour cherry, dried rose, blood orange, and wild strawberry, interwoven with notes of ironstone, anise, crushed herbs, and wet stone. The palate is powerful yet breathtakingly refined, delivering immense depth of red fruit, mineral tension, and commanding, chalky tannins. Acidity is vibrant and perfectly integrated, driving a finish of extraordinary length, resonance, and quiet authority.

Style and Character

Severe and tightly wound in youth, the 2016 Crichet Pajè is a wine of monumental structure and inner strength. It stands as one of the most profound expressions of Barbaresco ever produced — a Nebbiolo that rewards patience, contemplation, and long-term cellaring. This is a cornerstone wine for the most serious collectors of traditional Piedmont.

Cellaring and Pairing

Built for extended ageing, with an optimal drinking window from 2035 onwards and the capacity to evolve for 40 years or more. Decant generously when young. Best paired with braised game, truffle-rich dishes, slow-cooked beef, or aged Parmigiano Reggiano to match its depth and authority.
