2019 Chateau de Chamirey Clos L’Eveque Mercurey Premier Cru 750ml

Deep dark red core with black shaded surrounds and a dark red hue. Filling the nostrils are ripe dark cherry and strawberry aromas followed by some anise, scorched earth, sappy cedar and subtle spicy dried herb notes. Ripe almost juicy like black cherry and liquorice flavours take centre stage with some strawberry, earthy cedar and spicy herb characters lying underneath. Fine grained yet slightly sturdy tannin structure with vibrant acidity lending freshness to what is otherwise a ripe bold conclusion.

The Château de Chamirey's progress continues, as the estate moves away from herbicide use in the vineyards and toward gentler vinification. There's less punching down during fermentation, young wines are being settled longer before going to barrel, and racking now takes place using gas pressure rather than a pump. A new bottling line permits the washing and inerting of bottles before filling. Cooperage choices and percentages are being refined too, exemplified by the fact the domaine's prestige cuvée, "Le Cinq," now sees only 70% new oak in lieu of 100%. All in all, the positive trend continues, and this is a fine set of 2019s—sumptuous, succulent wines, bursting with expressive fruit that effectively conceals their alcoholic degree. The 2019 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos l'Évêque unwinds in the glass with notes of sweet red berries, wild plums and warm spices, framed by a deft patina of oak. Medium to full-bodied, lively and charming, with melting tannins and bright acids, it concludes with a mouthwatering finish. Drink 2021-2038.
