Felton Road is responsible, to a large extent, for putting Central Otago on the world Pinot Noir map. The wines are, well not so much fruit-driven, as perhaps turbo-charged! Amazing levels of red fruits, a subtle yet important savoury component, along with the silky texture all Pinot enthusiasts long for. This single-block wine shows how different portions of a single vineyard can still have a quite unique character, or what the French would call terrior.
Producer Notes: Beginning with meticulous site selection and vineyard design started in 1991, Felton Road's story is one of refusal to compromise. A strict 100% estate policy with fully organic and biodynamic viticulture (Demeter certified) ensures that our fruit arrives at the winery as pure as it can be, while our entire estate comes as close to true sustainability as is possible. A commitment to hands off winemaking: gravity flow, wild yeasts, wild malo, an avoidance of fining and filtration all help preserve the wine's expression of its terroir. No additions or adjustments are performed unless they absolutely need to be.
Drinking Window: 2026-2038
"Restrained wood with floral, dried herb and mineral complexity over a core of concentrated black fruit. Unquestionable elegance married to remarkable power, the intensely flavoursome palate unfolds in stages of savoury, fruit and floral, all kept in check by reasonably firm, ripe tannins with flashes of rosemary. Astounding complexity in a poised package. Medium-bodied but very long, this wine is all about the back-palate; there is plenty of matter here and it's currently very young. Despite the sheer concentration in evidence, this has impeccable balance and should age gracefully over the coming decade without losing its finesse."
-97pts, Stephen Wong for The Real Review
"25% whole cluster this year. In the pantheon of fine wine, Felton Road's Block 3 Pinot Noir, from a single patch of glacial silt with calcareous seams on the famous Elms vineyard, really needs no introduction. I'd tasted this wine and dragged the rest of the bottle to a winemaker mate's house for dinner. His wife did a double-take at the table and exclaimed 'god this is a beautiful wine'. I've been assured she never says that without good reason. And of course she is correct, it is a beautiful wine. There is a buoyancy to the wine that belies its fruit depth and complexity. Purely fruited, layered with spice, meadow herbs and wildflowers, fine, powdery tannins and sexy French oak – everything pitch-perfect and simpatico. It's just lovely."
