The Accidental Red was born in 2022 from an unexpected twist—literally by chance! While pressing Merlot for Rosé, there was excess juice that couldn’t be discarded, and the Shiraz pressings had too much color for the Rosé. So, the two were blended together.
In 2023 and again in 2024, Michael intentionally recreated this “accident” and refined it. Merlot berries are fermented with pressed Shiraz juice, using half the usual skins for the same volume of wine. For the 2024 version, 5% Malbec was added to the blend. The fermentation employs wild yeast and is kept short to minimize skin contact. The wine is then transferred to barrels for malolactic fermentation and matured for six months through the winter.
Made from premium Macedon Ranges grapes, this wine is designed to be bright, easy-drinking, and affordably fun. It offers lively red cherry flavors with a touch of juiciness, complemented by subtle spice and earthy notes for added complexity. The palate is smooth and mid-weight, reminiscent of a Pinot Noir, with silky tannins that linger on the finish.
